Anesthesia in different species

 DOG

Ketamine should not be used alone in dogs as it can cause muscle tone increase and convulsions.

Pre-medication: If necessary Atropine 0.02-0.04 mg / kg is used.

For 30-60 minutes of anesthesia:

Xylazine 1-2 mg / kg ca IM or Medetomidine 40-60 µg / kg ca IM

Ketamine 2-4 mg / kg ca IM or IV after 10 minutes (= Ketasol 10% 0.2-0.4 ml / 10 kg ca)

For anesthesia after 1 hour:

1- Medetomidine 20-40 µg / kg ca IM

After 10 minutes Ketamine 8-10 mg / kg ca IV (= Ketasol 10% 0.8-1.0 ml / 10 kg ca)

2- Xylazine 1-2 mg / kg ca IM

Ketamine 8-10 mg / kg ca IM after 10 minutes (= Ketasol 10% 0.8-1.0 ml / 10 kg ca)

CAT

Pre-medication with atropine (0.02-0.04 mg / kg) is useful.

Ketamine alone 20-30 mg / kg ca IM (= Ketasol 10% 0.2-0.3 ml / kg ca)

Combination (to prevent unwanted effects)

1- Medetomidine 80-100 µg / kg ca IM

Ketamine 5-7.5 mg / kg ca IM (= Ketasol 10% 0.05-0.075 ml / kg ca)

2- Xylazine 1-2 mg / kg ca IM

Ketamine 15 mg / kg ca IM (= Ketasol 10% 0.15 ml / kg ca)

CATTLE

For 30 minutes of anesthesia:

Ketamine alone 4-6 mg / kg ca slow IV (= Ketasol 10% 4-6 ml / 100 kg ca)

Combination 1- Detomidine 10-30 µg / kg ca IM or slow IV

Ketamine 1-2 mg / kg ca IV after 10 minutes (= Ketasol 10% 1-2 ml / 100 kg ca)

2- Xylazine 1.1 mg / kg ca

Ketamine 1-2 mg / kg ca IV after 10 minutes (= Ketasol 10% 1-2 ml / 100 kg ca)

Ketamine in calves 10 mg / kg ca IM

HORSE

Sedative pre-medication (necessary to ensure efficacy)

1- Detomidine 20 µg / kg ca IV,

Ketamine 2.2 mg / kg ca IV after 5 minutes (= Ketasol 10% 2.2 ml / 100 kg ca)

2- Xylazine 1.1 mg / kg ca

Ketamine 2.2 mg / kg ca IV after 5 minutes (= Ketasol 10% 2.2 ml / 100 kg ca)

After injection, the horse lies immediately without any external assistance. If strong muscle relaxation is also desired, it is best to apply Guaifenes to the lying horse until the horse shows the first signs of relaxation.

SHEEP-GOAT

Atropine 0.2 mg / kg ca IM followed by Xylazine 0.2 mg / kg ca IM followed by Ketamine 22 mg / kg ca IV.

PIG

Xylazine 2 mg / kg ca IM followed by Ketamine 15 mg / kg ca IM.

For intravenous (IV) administration; Xylazine 1 mg / kg ca and Ketamine 10 mg / kg ca may be used.

POULTRY: 0.25 ml / kg ca IM Ketasol 10%

WILD ANIMALS:

Wild cat (Lynx): 0.7–0.8 ml / 10 kg ca IM Ketasol 10% alone or

0.02–0.4 ml / 10 kg ca IM Ketasol 10% and 1-2 mg / kg ca IM Xylazine in combination.

Monkey: 0.05–0.25 ml / kg ca IM Ketasol 10% alone or

0.03–0.05 ml / kg ca IM Ketasol 10% and 0.5-1 mg / kg ca IM Xylazine in combination

Ceylan, Karaca, Deer: 0.2-0.7 ml / 10 kg ca IM Ketasol 10% and 1-3 mg / kg ca IM Xylazine in combination.
